Wampanoag/Algonquin Matrilineal, Jan 2000

Query From Mary Rodd Furbee swpub@access.mountain.net Jan 2000

I'm trying to determine if the Wampanoag people of southern New England (Algonquin) were a matrilineal society (in 17th century, before King Phillips' war wiped most out). I've read conflicting information...Thanks much.
