Captivity narratives Bibliography

Query From Trish Morse <pmorse@midway.uchicago.edu> 05 Aug 1997

Hello, I'm helping a friend who isn't on the list who wants to know about captivity narratives involving Plains Indians and whether any of them discuss rape. The project involves a look at how this translated into film, so we'd like to know about the sources underlying tales of white women captured by Plains Indians. We'd like to know both primary accounts and secondary analyses--well, any insight is welcome.

Further explanation: We are familiar with the literature surrounding the films but not with the captivity narratives that underlie films like "The Searchers" and the novel that it's based on. My friend is looking at the narrative that the novelist used as a source. ...We're looking for some 19th century expertise. Thanks again.
