I think sometimes students see history as something separate from their own lives. I'm sure we've all had the experience of asking students about what we assumed was a major news story and getting blank looks in response. Well every now and then I like to lean into that by using local newspapers. We search a newspaper from whatever time period we are studying and read a little bit about community issues instead of the big events. Kat and Michelle,
Thank you for this thoughtful post. I think we have all been in this situation. I appreciate the tips on ways we can help student advocate for themselves in positive ways. If a student becomes angry about an issue in one of my courses, I'm cautious not to react to their anger and frustration. I start by acknowledging the way they feel and tell them the problem can be solved. I explain it is not problem, but how we react to it that matters. I offer them the opportunity to work with me to solve the problem.
