Bio: Patrick E. Brady is a PhD candidate in History at the University of Iowa. He earned an MA in History (2018) at the University of Iowa and a BA in History (Delta Upsilon, 2017) at Northern Illinois University. He serves as the treasurer of the Graduate History Society at the University of Iowa. Mr. Brady writes on economic and social factions in Revolutionary America. His focus is primarily on loyalist slave owners in South Carolina. His dissertation project seeks to understand how loyalists' commitments to slavery shaped their support for the empire. Desiring to keep loyalists on the side of empire, the British Empire upheld loyalists' ownership of enslaved blacks at the expense of blacks loyal to the empire. In this way, the British were like Janus, liberating some people from slavery while impressing others into bondage. |
