Patricia Hogwood <p.hogwood@westminster.ac.uk> University of Westminster I am a Reader (Associate Professor) in comparative European politics with special interests in German identity politics and European public policy. My research is guided by my interests in democracy, the interface between state and society, cultural identity, internal and external security, structures of governance and public policy. As a Europeanist I am interested not only in the way these factors interact within a single nation state, but also between European states and the European Union (EU). My research on German politics looks at the impacts of German unification on identity, democracy and public policy and includes studies on: the German ‘inner unity’ project and the politics of behaviour change; the politics of wellbeing in united Germany; and consumer culture and ‘normalisation’ in post-GDR society. I have a long-standing interest in the development of immigration policy in (West) Germany since the Second World War. I am particularly interested in what Germany’s immigration policy reveals about constitutional, cultural and security identities in the country. This work links with my interest in the emergence of immigration policy as a competence of the EU. I am currently working on the institutionalisation and securitisation of border control within the EU and the implications of this for developments in immigration policy within the member states. At a theoretical level, I am exploring institutionalist and securitisation perspectives on the creation of new EU policy domains of sustainability and immigration control. |
