Heide Imai Hosei University, Department of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies Dr. Heide Imai, PhD, MA, Dipl.Ing. Architect - Research, Teaching, Writing Heide Imai is Assistant Professor at the Department of Global and Interdisciplinary Studies (GIS), Hosei University, Tokyo and Research Associate at Keio University. Heide holds a PhD from Manchester Metropolitan University with a dissertation entitled ‘Tokyo’s Contested Alleyways: The Role of the Roji in Understanding Globalization, Attachment and the Social Construction of Place’. During her PhD she was also working as researcher at Prof. Monnai’s Lab, Kyoto University (2006) and at Prof. Jinnai’s Lab at Hosei University (2007-2008). As a JSPS Post-Doctoral Researcher at Hosei University (2009-2012) she focused on urban and visual anthropology as well as sustainable community development studying the value of small urban places being affected by re-development, gentrification and commodification. Current Publications include The liminal nature of alleyways: Understanding the alleyway roji as ‘boundary’ between past and present (2012) and Alleyway in a Global Perspective (forthcoming). As a licensed Architect (AIA Chapter Japan, NAI, BDA) she has practiced in offices in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. Heide is also teaching courses on critical urbanism, urban design, architectural studies and social research methods at universities in Germany, UK and other parts of Japan as part of her regular field- and research trips.
