I have a bachelor’s degree in general anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and I am currently finishing my doctoral dissertation in cultural anthropology at the CUNY Graduate Center. My dissertation focuses on the experiences of minority students in an urban, public university (Univ. de Paris VIII). I use higher education as a lens through which issues of immigration, social mobility, and social exclusion can be examined.
Although the main focus of my dissertation research is education, as an urban anthropologist, I am also interested in the relationship between the built environment and social organization and how the layout of urban areas creates spaces of belonging and non-belonging. Recently I have presented research on the Parisian public transportation system and its role in structuring geographic and social mobility and the Parisian botanical gardens as an agent and symbol of national identity.
I have over fourteen years of teaching experience in public and private colleges.
