Bio: Dr. Daniel Cross Turner is Associate Professor of English at Coastal Carolina University. His research focuses on connections between aesthetic and cultural media, especially poetry and film, in exploring questions of regional identity vis-à-vis national and transnational contexts. He is the author of numerous articles on modern and contemporary writing, popular culture, and cinema, as well as creative writing, reviews, and pedagogical essays. He has conducted and published interviews with Pulitzer Prize-winning poets Charles Wright, Yusef Komunyakaa, and Natasha Trethewey (U.S. Poet Laureate), as well as fiction-writer Daniel Wallace. Turner's first book, SOUTHERN CROSSINGS: POETRY, MEMORY, AND THE TRANSCULTURAL SOUTH (University of Tennessee Press, 2012), examines Southern poetry from 1950 to the present as a distinctly historicized genre. His articles appear in MOSAIC, GENRE, SOUTHERN LITERARY JOURNAL, MISSISSIPPI QUARTERLY, SOUTHERN QUARTERLY, SOUTH CAROLINA REVIEW, and JAMES DICKEY REVIEW, among other venues. Along with Eric Gary Anderson and Taylor Hagood, he is editor of the essay collection UNDEAD SOUTHS: BEYOND THE GOTHIC, under contract with Louisiana State University Press. His other current book project, SOUTHERN/PRIMITIVE, engages with intersections of Southernness and primitivism at work in the U.S. South from 1919 to the present. |
