I am a specialist in 19th century U.S. History with a particular interest in slavery and emancipation, the Civil War and Reconstruction, and issues of law and justice. In particular, I am interested in bringing the Midwest more centrally into discussions of slavery, race, and the war. My work tends to focus especially on individuals who have been disenfranchised through the historical record, using what fragments remain to reconstruct obscure or ordinary lives with an aim toward linking them to broader themes and ideas.
