Sasha Mullally <s.mullally@polyvalence.net> University of Alberta I have two major works in progress 1. “Unpacking the Black Bag: A History of North American Country Doctors, 1900-1950.” (350 pp) This book project investigates the social transformation of rural medicine in the first half of the twentieth century, wherein a marketplace populated by peripatetic country doctors gave way to one dominated by office-based general practitioners. This social and cultural history of what it meant to be a “country doctor” throughout this transitional period performs a comparative a cross-border study of rural practices in Northern New England and the Maritime Provinces. The principal sources are rural physician life-writing. 2. “History, Memory and the Making of Dr. Monty MacMillan, 1920s-1970s.” This ongoing book project is investigating the creation and consolidation of community memory about the life and practice of Dr. C.L. MacMillan, a well-known country doctor from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The intersections of history, memory and commemoration are revealed in an extensive private oral history archive collected by the physician and his family. I am currently pursuing this project under the auspices of an AMS/Hannah Institute for the History of Medicine post doctoral fellowship at the Gorsebrook Research Institute at Saint Mary's University (Halifax). |
