Janaki Nair <janaki@cssscal.org> Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata I am currently working on some essays on the history of Modern Mysore. One of them concerns the manner in which a city like Sriranagapatna, which was for long the capital of the Wodeyars of Mysore, as well as the seat of Hyder and Tipu's reign, quickly becomes deurbanised after the British takeover, while the neighbouring region of Mysore is invented as the capital of the restored monarchy. My interest is to explore the modes by which one site (Srirangapatna) is inscribed as a topography of defeat, right up to the present day, while another, wholly modern monarchical landscape is built up in Mysore. |
