The Division houses most formats of materials--monographs, theses, periodicals, newspapers, microfilm, photographs, videocassettes, slides, maps, CD-ROMs, and archival/manuscript materials. It is the largest and most comprehensive single collection of materials relating to the District of Columbia community. Included in the collection are over 20,000 volumes covering virtually every aspect of life in the District, and extensive vertical file of newspaper clippings and pamphlets. Archival collections extend to over 2,000 linear feet. In 1982 the Division received the morgues of the defunct Washington Star newspaper--several million photographs and 13 million clippings. The Division is also home to a variety of computerized information resources--online access to newspapers, Arc View GIS, and internet access. Responsibilities: Reference service to a varied population of general public, researchers, authors, and academics; covering a busy reference desk; utilizing a complete range of tools--print and electronic, including Lexis-Nexis; Geographic Information Systems--implement and manage an ArcView-based system and liaison with other data agencies; Participant in development and maintenance of Library website; collection development for all non-serial formats (print, CD-ROM, online); review of gifts; Catalog Department liaison; Preparation of collection guides and bibliographies (print and website); Collection maintenance--binding, replacement, reformatting; Local database development (PC-based MARC-AMC archival materials database, MS-Access short title database); D.C.
