The Department of History at Stony Brook University, a public R1 institution with a highly diverse student population, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor focused on the History of Latin American Indigenous Peoples/African Diaspora, with a specialty in South America, Central America, or the Caribbean, but not Mexico.
The time period of the candidates' research is open, but preference will be given to scholars of themes including but not limited to: slavery, race, labor, migrations and the transatlantic world.
We encourage applicants with interdisciplinary training who situate the Americas in critical global, environmental, medical and/or ethnographic frameworks. We seek a scholar who is enthusiastic about mentoring graduate students and who will offer courses aligned with one or more of the Department's thematic clusters: Global connections, empire, capitalism; Health, science, environment; Race, citizenship, migration; Religion, gender, cultural identity; States, nations, political cultures. https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/history/grad/themes.html
The ideal candidate will also be an engaged teacher of undergraduate survey and upper-division courses on colonial and/or modern Latin America. Standard teaching load is 2:2. As a faculty member in History, the candidate will also be able to take advantage of connections with Stony Brook's Global Studies Major; Institute for Globalization Studies; Latin American, Latinx & Caribbean Studies Center; Africana Studies Department; and other interdisciplinary programs. Qualifications
Required qualifications: PhD from an accredited institution with specialization in Latin American History. The selected candidate should have their degree in hand by August 2024.
Preferred qualifications: Experience teaching undergraduate courses in person.
Preferred: Field in Indigenous or Afro-Latin America

Only references of shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Shortlisted candidates will be expected to provide a research statement and teaching statement with sample syllabus. The Department expects to conduct remote interviews with shortlisted candidates and host finalists on campus early 2024.

In accordance with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) regulation that all hospitals and nursing homes “continuously require all personnel to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19,” Candidates who are not already vaccinated must obtain the first dose of the vaccine within three (3) calendar days of acceptance of conditional job offer and must obtain any subsequent doses in accordance with the vaccine protocol.
