History Associates (HAI) has an immediate need of a library cataloger to work at a client site in Bowie, Maryland. The cataloger will be expected to work full-time under the supervision of a project manager. The position is available immediately and expected to last four-five months.
Overview: The Library Cataloger will play a vital role in creating and maintaining an efficient cataloging system for a diverse collection of approximately 2,000 publications, encompassing books, pamphlets, periodicals, and other resources in various languages and formats contained within an archival collection. This role requires expertise in cataloging, including descriptive and subject cataloging, Library of Congress classification assignment, and the use of cataloging tools such as OCLC Connexion and Voyager Cataloging Module. The Library Cataloger must also possess German language skills to ensure accurate cataloging.
Responsibilities:
- Item-Level Inventory: Create a comprehensive item-level inventory of the collection, ensuring accurate documentation of each publication.
- Cataloging: Perform copy cataloging, original cataloging, or updates to existing records as necessary. This includes descriptive cataloging, subject cataloging, Library of Congress classification assignment, and shelflisting.
- German Language: Apply German literacy to catalog materials accurately.
- Authority Work: Verify the correctness of access points, ensuring they are properly assigned and constructed according to Library of Congress Subject Headings and Library of Congress Name Authority File. Consult with the Client Staff for any additional authority work required.
- Material Handling: Collaborate with designated Contract Personnel and Client Staff to ensure materials are appropriately handled, rehoused, barcoded, and labeled.
- Quality Control: Adhere to established quality control protocols and consult with Client Staff as needed to address quality concerns.
- Coordination: Work closely with Client Staff to facilitate physical access to materials and track materials as they progress through various processes, including outsourced digitization.
- Project-Related Tasks: Participate in other project-related tasks and meetings as needed.
Deliverables:
- Create or update original, modified, and copy catalog records for approximately 450 monographs and 50 periodical titles (estimated 400 issues) in Voyager Cataloging Module.
- Utilize and record holdings in OCLC Connexion.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Library Science (MLS)
- Strong proficiency in cataloging standards and practices, including familiarity with OCLC Connexion and Voyager Cataloging Module.
- German language literacy.
- Knowledge of Library of Congress classification and authority work.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in cataloging records.
- Ability to work collaboratively with project staff and external personnel.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Knowledge of library and museum operations is a plus.
- Ability to adapt to changing project requirements and priorities.
