Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as an Assistant Professor in History beginning in the 2024-2025 academic year.
The History Department seeks a historian specializing in public history with a geographic or thematic field that complements the needs of the department. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate history surveys as well as upper-division courses and graduate courses in their area of expertise. Research emphasis is open. Annual evaluation and progress toward tenure are generally based on a distribution of effort at 60% teaching, 20% academic achievement, and 20% service. The successful candidate will contribute to expanding the department's course offerings and professional development initiatives in public history within the context of the rich local history resources in the Rio Grande Valley and university programs such as the Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools (CHAPS), the Public Heritage and Community Engagement BAIS, and the School of Interdisciplinary Programs and Community Engagement. As an integral part of the College of Liberal Arts, the Department of History introduces students to different historical eras, diverse cultures, famous and ordinary women and men, and a variety of geographical settings. Our courses challenge students to think critically, express themselves clearly, and become informed and responsible citizens in an increasingly interconnected world. The Department of History offers courses in historical methodology, research, world regions, and themes of the human experience. Faculty members engage in research within an international community of peers and share that knowledge in publications and with students. Minimum Qualifications:
The minimum qualifications to be considered as a tenure track Assistant Professor are a Ph.D. degree in History or a related field of study with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework in History from an accredited institution of higher education. ABDs will be considered, but a conferred doctorate by August 31, 2024 is required for appointment.

Preferred Qualification:
Experience in public history such as with community organizations; state, local, and/or federal historical agencies; historic preservation associations; museums; digital humanities; and/or private historical contracting is desired.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
