The Department of History in the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks an Assistant Professor, FA040.
JOB DETAILS:
Specifically seeking an Assistant Professor of Nineteenth or Twentieth Century US History. We are especially interested in applicants who can teach in the following areas: Race/Ethnicity, Immigration, Borderlands, African-American or Latinx History, and Public History. The position begins in August 2024. This is a full-time position with responsibilities for teaching undergraduate courses in the department, research, and service to the university, community, and profession. Research and teaching expertise should complement existing faculty expertise.
The successful candidate will be able to teach a freshmen-level world history course and freshmen-level US history surveys as part of their regular rotation, in addition to upper-level courses in their area of expertise. The teaching load is a 4/4. The candidate will also be expected to pursue an active research agenda that engages undergraduate students, results in publications, and contributes to advancing the department, university, profession, and society. The candidate will also be expected to participate in service activities and embrace inclusive principles as a member of the university community.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in History or a related field is required.
- ABD candidates may apply but must have their degree completed by the contract start date in August 2024; if not, they will be hired on a one-year contract with the understanding that their degree will be completed before January 2025 in advance of their first scheduled review.
- Demonstrated excellence and commitment to teaching with an emphasis on promoting the success of undergraduate students, clear evidence of scholarly potential, commitment to working with diverse populations, and serving as an active member of the university community.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to interact respectfully and work collaboratively with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including students, parents, staff, and faculty.
- Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations, including necessary training and drills.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Full-time teaching responsibilities include a rotation of courses in twentieth-century world history, both halves of the US history surveys, as well as additional courses in their area of expertise. Research expectations include an active research agenda resulting in publications. In addition, faculty members serve as advisors/mentors to students and are encouraged to engage students in undergraduate research or other scholarly and creative activities. Service responsibilities include committee service at the departmental, college, and university levels as well as participation in community organizations and the discipline as relevant to the candidate's expertise and interest. Faculty at UW-W may be required to teach in a variety of formats, including in-person, online, and/or in a hybrid format.
