OVERVIEW OF TUJ AND INTELLECTUAL HERITAGE
The Intellectual Heritage Program at TUJ invites applications for a student-centered full-time faculty member to start in the Spring, Summer, or Fall semester 2024. TUJ faculty contracts are renewable. In accordance with university standards and Japanese law, successful faculty are eligible for a continuing contract after five years.
Based in Philadelphia, Temple University is a public Carnegie-designated R1 research university that ranks in the top 350 of all universities worldwide according to Times Higher Education. With approximately 35,000 students, Temple maintains a multi-campus system extending from Pennsylvania to Rome to Japan.
Established in 1982, the Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) is a full-service branch campus that educates students from over 60 countries in English in its undergraduate programs, graduate programs (law, business, graduate education), and non-degree programs (continuing education and corporate education). TUJ is expanding, financially healthy, and has just hired seven new full-time faculty lines in the last two years, with additional lines planned for this academic year.
TUJ offers undergraduate programs to a broad mix of over 1,800 Japanese and non-Japanese degree-seeking students who will earn their degrees from Temple University through the Japan campus. Every semester, additional students from Temple’s main campus and other universities converge on our campus for a short-term study abroad experience.
In one of the most dynamic cities in the world, we offer twelve full undergraduate majors ranging from Art to International Business to Psychological Studies. Our faculty and staff is international, with over 40 full time faculty joined by experienced administrators and many part-time adjunct faculty from the professions, business, and the arts. TUJ holds classes in the fall and spring semesters (15 weeks) and over a well-enrolled 10-week summer semester.
OVERVIEW OF POSITIONS
The Intellectual Heritage (IH) program invites applications for a student-centered full-time Assistant Professor position to begin in Spring, Summer, or Fall 2024. We invite applications from experienced and passionate teachers with a background in the humanities or social sciences, especially teachers with experience working with an international student population.
We seek candidates to teach the pair of core courses all Temple undergraduates take: IH 1: The Good Life and IH 2: The Common Good. The IH courses are the foundation of Temple’s General Education curriculum. In these discussion-based seminars, students read primary texts of world literature, philosophy, and religion to investigate fundamental questions of human experience. IH asks students to share ideas, ask and debate questions, and actively listen to peers. Students also make connections between the course texts and current moral, social, and political issues.

The successful candidate may also be able to teach additional courses in their area of specialization.
OTHER DUTIES
- Develop instructional materials for IH students and faculty
- Mentor new IH faculty
- Maintain active and on-going research or creative activity
- Fulfill university service duties through participation in faculty committees, indirect teaching activities, etc.
- Qualified and interested applicants may be considered for additional administrative duties at higher pay
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Instruction is in English and fluency in English is required
- Terminal degree in the humanities or social sciences, to be awarded by start date; Applicants with a Master’s degree are welcome to apply and may be hired at a different rank
- Evidence of student-centered teaching appropriate for a discussion-based undergraduate seminar
- A record of scholarly publications and presentations, and an on-going research agenda
