The Department of Communication and Media Studies at Fordham University, The Jesuit University of New York, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position with a specialization in Strategic Communication for Social Change, to commence September 1, 2024. The position will be based at Fordham’s Rose Hill campus, with the potential opportunity to contribute to the Lincoln Center campus as well. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute pedagogically to the department’s undergraduate major in Communication and Culture and to the Strategic Communication track of our M.A. program in Public Media. There is potential to also contribute to the department’s majors in Journalism and/or Digital Technology and Emerging Media as well as other programs across the university.
About the Department
Fordham’s Department of Communication and Media Studies advocates the model of the publicly-engaged scholar and critically-informed practitioner who is civically and socially reflective and critical through analytical and/or applied means. Our faculty includes scholars and practitioners from a range of theoretical and methodological perspectives.

We seek applicants in the area of strategic communication for social change and/or civic engagement, with an emphasis on critical analysis of persuasion, promotion, and public relations. The ideal candidate's research agenda will include engagement not only with rhetorical persuasion but also with changing social, political, and technological modes of strategic communication. Areas of study might include social movements, mis/disinformation, computational propaganda, promotional industries/cultures, or other lenses for the critical study of public communication. Areas of interest to our department also include audience research and analysis. The candidate will be expected to contribute pedagogically to subject areas in one or more of our four majors – Communication and Culture, Journalism, Digital Technology and Emerging Media, and/or Film & Television – and to the Strategic Communication track in our M.A. program in Public Media. The Department is home to some of the most popular Majors at Fordham University and the ability to teach courses outside of the specific field of Strategic Communication would also be beneficial. Capacity to contribute to department and program administration is desirable. The salary range for this position is $92,000-$105,000.
- Ph.D. (or ABD) in Communication or a related discipline, successfully defended by May 2024.
- A strong research agenda and publication record.
- Ability to teach courses in a variety of areas in Strategic Communication, and original courses in their own subspecialty.
- Evidence of excellence in teaching.
- Commitment to mentoring and advising students.
