The https://www.utrgv.edu/school-of-interdisciplinary-programs-and-community-engagement/ (SIPCE) at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley seeks applicants for a faculty position at the rank of assistant professor (tenure-track) or associate professor (tenured) for the 2024-2025 academic year.
The successful applicant will contribute primarily to SIPCE's https://www.utrgv.edu/mas/index.htm (MAS) Program and the https://www.utrgv.edu/esp/ (ENST) Program through research, teaching, and service.
Preferred areas of expertise include but are not limited to: the impact of environmental and ecological disasters on Mexican American, Hispanic, Latinx, AfroLatinidad, and/or Indigenous communities; climate change and migration; environmental and health disparities in North/Central America and/or the U.S-Mexico borderlands; intersectional environmentalism; intersectional sustainability, eco-feminism; environmental policies and governance; environmental issues, agriculture, and food (in)security; and/or K-12 environmental education.
The successful applicant will have a track-record of high-quality, innovative research and scholarship, as well as have demonstrated teaching excellence and experience at the university level that includes a combination of different modalities (e.g. face-to-face, hybrid, online).
Candidates at the rank of associate professor must have a recognized and sustained track record of research—including community-engaged research—and scholarship. Candidates at the rank of assistant professor must demonstrate potential for independent research and high-quality scholarship in peer-reviewed venues.
The successful applicant will be expected to teach existing classes such as “Introduction to Mexican American Studies,” “Introduction to Environmental Studies,” “Research Methods in Mexican American/Chicanx/Latinx Studies,” and “Special Topics in Mexican American Studies.” The successful applicant will also be able to develop new courses in their areas of expertise. Research and teaching expertise complementing that of SIPCE faculty is preferred.

Department/College BackgroundSchool of Interdisciplinary Programs and Community Engagement (SIPCE) houses several degree programs that include Mexican American Studies, Environmental Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, Medical Humanities, Multidisciplinary Studies, Human Dimensions of Organizations, Public Heritage and Community Engagement, and Film Studies.
The Mexican American Studies Program is a social justice-oriented program that prepares students to work, serve and research in their communities to address and navigate the complex socio-political/historical conditions surrounding Mexican American/Chicanx/Latinx communities. MAS prepares students to be leaders and advocates in their communities and professions to transform their conditions and promote a just society.
The main goal of the Environmental Studies Program is to foster a learning community of students and faculty who use the tools of the humanities and social sciences to identify, name, explain, and analyze the causes of our global ecological crisis. The program supports interdisciplinary, community-engaged approaches to designing and implementing humane, just, and sustainable solutions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in the humanities, liberal arts, or behavioral and social sciences from an accredited university. ABDs will be considered, but a conferred doctorate by September 1, 2024, is required for appointment.
Candidates for a tenured appointment must be tenured at their current institution. To be eligible for the rank of Associate Professor in the program candidates must meet the institutional requirements for tenure.
A research plan (1 page maximum) and Teaching Portofolio including sample syllabi and teaching evaluations are required documents (to be uploaded under Research Statment and Evidence of Teaching Effectiveness).
Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
Primary expertise in Mexican American, Latina/o/x Studies, Chicana/o/x, Ethnic, and/or Borderlands Studies.
Secondary expertise in Environmental Studies, Environmental Health, Ecology, Medical Humanities, and/or Food Studies.
Preferred Qualification:
Experience in obtaining external research funding through grant writing.
Bilingual/biliterate abilities, preferably in English/Spanish.
Experience in program leadership and development.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
