Assistant Professor in Sustainability & Health
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Michigan, United States |
Position: | Assistant Professor |
The Department of Social Sciences at Michigan Technological University invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor in Sustainability & Health. Applicants must have a PhD in a Social Science field (broadly defined) specializing in one or more dimensions of Sustainability and Health.
Human-induced pressures such as climate change, increased energy needs, deforestation, and urban growth are altering social and ecological systems with implications for health and well-being. We seek candidates whose research addresses ongoing socio-ecological crises, inequalities, and marginalization. The successful candidate will collaborate with researchers on campus to develop an externally funded research program related to sustainability, health, and well-being, be able to teach a course on sustainability science for graduate and undergraduate students and contribute to a new undergraduate concentration in health.
Candidates’ research should examine health and well-being as social, cultural, and/or ecological practices and link health and well-being to relationships across individuals, communities, policies, and/or populations.
Competitive applicants will conduct research that explicitly links one or more dimensions of sustainability with its impacts on health and well-being and will demonstrate the ability to teach courses in, specifically, sustainability science and in population/community/public health. We are open to all methodological approaches, with a preference for candidates who can demonstrate experience and/or capacity to work across disciplines and methodologies.
Michigan Tech attracts world-class faculty and staff who enrich the educational experience of smart, motivated, and adventurous students. Applicants who are committed to promoting a sense of belonging and contributing to an equitable and inclusive environment for all are strongly encouraged to apply (https://www.mtu.edu/diversity-inclusion/). Applicants are encouraged to utilize their cover letter and/or research statement to describe their experiences and/or skill set(s) that will contribute to diversity and inclusivity in scholarship and professional engagement.
In addition to developing and maintaining an active research portfolio, the candidate will engage in undergraduate and graduate teaching (typically teaching up to 2 courses per academic semester) and contribute to professional service. This new Assistant Professor in Sustainability & Health will build a research profile in this intersectional area of scholarship while supporting the growth of existing and new degree programs. Specifically, the Department of Social Sciences is home to undergraduate programs in Sustainability Science & Society and Policy & Community Development, graduate programs (MS & PhD) in Environmental & Energy Policy and Industrial Heritage & Archaeology, and a newly launched MS program in Sustainable Communities.
