The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Washington University in St. Louis seeks to hire a fulltime Lecturer on the teaching track in Japanese language starting in August 2024 for the 2024-2025 academic year. Responsibilities include teaching or co-teaching all levels of Japanese language, working cooperatively with other teaching staff, applying new technology and developing teaching materials, and organizing and participating in language and cultural activities. This role requires duties equivalent to a full-time teaching load, which may include a combination or teaching and other departmental service and advising as appropriate.
Initial appointments at the rank of lecturer are renewed on an annual basis, and reappointment is contingent upon a successful annual evaluation and review. Teaching track faculty will not be evaluated on or expected to engage in research or scholarship as part of their appointment.
Applicants must have a minimum of an M.A., with strong preference for a Ph.D., in Japanese linguistics, language pedagogy, second-language acquisition or a related field by the time of appointment. Requirements include native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English, minimum of two years of college teaching experience, and evidence of on-going commitment to language teaching.
Applicants should be able to teach or co-teach all levels of modern Japanese language, as well as develop teaching materials for our language curriculum. The successful candidate will teach at all levels of Japanese, which may include teaching first-level through fourth-level Japanese. We seek someone insightful as well as innovative in language teaching for the 21st century.
