The Department of History at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in New Brunswick invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Public History to begin in fall 2024. The department welcomes applications from candidates who work in all regional fields and time periods but is particularly interested in scholars who work in the areas of historical memory, historic preservation, museum work, oral history, or digital humanities. A PhD in History is required; candidates must have received their degree by the start of the appointment.
Applicants should have a strong research agenda in public history including publications in peer-reviewed venues and/or exhibits or other public-oriented projects in digital or physical format. The successful candidate will teach a range of public history courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in addition to courses in their own area of specialization and will contribute to the department’s undergraduate certificate program in public history and the graduate certificate program in the Public Humanities of the School of Arts and Sciences. This position will help support the School’s Public Humanities Initiative. The ideal candidate should be able to collaborate with existing Rutgers public history resources, such as the Rutgers Oral History Archive or the Scarlet and Black Research Center, to create projects that bring students, faculty and local organizations together to preserve and reflect on the past in ways that highlight the diversity of the New Brunswick community.
