The Department of Asian Studies at Cornell University invites applications for a full-time Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (rank will be based on experience) position in Japanese language beginning July 1, 2024. Initial one-year probationary contract with possible renewal, contingent upon the continued needs of the department and availability of program funding.
Minimum qualifications: Master’s degree and Native and near-Native proficiency in both Japanese and English are required, as well as the ability to teach all levels of Japanese along with prior minimum 3 years of college-level teaching experience. Also required are an explicit understanding of the linguistic properties of Japanese; knowledge of the cultural background necessary to teach the language, technology-related pedagogy and flexibility in using different teaching methodologies; and the ability to work both in a team and autonomously at all levels of the language.

The Statement of Contribution to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion need not be a lengthy document. A statement of one-two pages would suffice for the initial application, and the Search Committee would then discuss further with short-listed candidates during the interview process as needed. For a position of this nature, applicants might address topics such as: How does the candidate create a pedagogical environment suited to students of diverse background so that all students can participate fully? How does the candidate’s language pedagogy offer new perspectives on cultures, beliefs, and practices? What is the candidate’s approach to mentoring students?

Pay Range: $59,500 - $77,000
The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:
- Prior relevant work or industry experience.
- Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
- Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflect 9-month annual salary).
- Unique applicable skills.
