Job Description Summary
The Associate Director will assist the Director in maintaining and expanding the activities that take place at the Center. With the addition of a new endowment for an annual Benjamin Franklin distinguished lecture series, and a major expansion of the consortium, the employee will be vital to launching, planning and managing a range of new offerings, as well as continuing to run our current seminar, brown bag, and conference programming.
Job Description
The McNeil Center for Early American Studies facilitates scholarly inquiry into the histories and cultures of North America in the Atlantic world before 1850, with a particular but by no means exclusive emphasis on the mid-Atlantic region. The Center offers pre- and post-doctoral fellowships to encourage use of the Philadelphia area's magnificent manuscript, rare book, and museum collections, conducts a seminar series to promote intellectual community among local and visiting faculty and graduate students, and organizes occasional national conferences to foster interdisciplinary research.
Duties:
• Planning/research/related activities: collaborate and advise the Director in activities such as planning of coordination of programs, selecting research fellows, research and writing of grants, manage publicity and outreach.
• Coordination of weekly brown bags and seminars; responsibilities including the planning of schedules, the recruitment of and correspondence with presenters, and chairing of weekly 75-minute sessions. Organization of manuscript workshops for the Center's postdoctoral fellows: coordination of outside reviewers and local participants.
• Coordination of two national conferences, a summer writing workshop and a lecture series (plus associated activities) each academic year: correspondence with and general assistance for external program committees and organizers, with particular attention to compliance with McNeil Center policies and practices, correspondence with speakers and presenters regarding the intellectual content of conference programs, and coordination with office staff regarding conference logistics.
• Acting as the chief coordinator and contact for the McNeil Center's Consortium Institutions - an expanding group of 35+ universities, colleges, archives, and museums who pay an annual subscription fee to gain access to in person and online MCEAS programs designed to serve their students, staff and faculty. Coordination of writing groups for consortium members. Organization of undergraduate research workshop and summer internship program for consortium members.
Qualifications:
A Master's in History, English or other relevant field and at least one year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. A Ph.D. in History, English, or American Studies and 2-3 years of experience is strongly preferred, with research specialty dealing with North America before 1850. Excellent writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills and experience in planning of academic conferences and seminars required. Experience in grant-writing, public outreach, and social media preferred.
