The College of Liberal Studies at Seoul National University invites applications for two full-time tenure-track faculty appointments, respectively in the fields of Digital Humanities and Urban Studies, beginning September 2023.
The College of Liberal Studies (CLS) is an undergraduate college dedicated to Liberal Arts and Interdisciplinary Education within the larger Seoul National University (SNU) system. CLS students can choose any major across the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering and Business Administration. They are encouraged to major in various Interdisciplinary Programs on campus (such as Information Science and Culture, Artificial Intelligence, etc) and can also design their own majors (such as Kinetic Modeling, Virtual Reality Studies, etc).
The successful candidate will demonstrate a broad and robust research agenda as well as a commitment to excel in teaching and mentoring a wide range of students. The ability to interact and advise students with various academic interests and diverse backgrounds and the capacity to work together with colleagues from different fields is essential.
For the Digital Humanities position, we especially seek candidates who can cross the disciplinary boundaries between Humanities/Social Science and Engineering and have expertise in merging digital techniques and computational methods with questions and insights from languages and literature, history, philosophy, and/or the arts. The successful candidate will teach courses and guide undergraduate research in DH subfields such as data mining, digital visualization, topic modeling, cultural analytics, among others. Affliliations with the College of Humanities and/or the Graduate School of Data Science may be possible.
For the Urban Studies position, which will be a joint-appointment with the Graduate School of Environmental Studies(GSES), we especially seek candidates who can incorporate the qualitative and quantitative methodologies of Humanities and Social Sciences to further our understanding of the modern urban environment. The successful candidate will teach thematic courses incorporating insights from Urban Studies, advise CLS students interested in related fields, and teach graduate courses and guide research at GSES in specific fields of Urban Studies (history, sociology, geography, cultural studies, planning, etc).
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand at the point of application. Korean is the primary language of instruction at SNU, though some courses are also taught in English. SNU provides a generous start-up fund, various research grants, subsidized on-campus housing, and the opportunity to work with over 2000 faculty across the disciplines.
