Truman State University seeks a diverse pool of applicants for a full-time non-tenure-track assistant professor in Asian history and interdisciplinary studies to begin August 2023.
Responsibilities: Ability to teach lower-level surveys in Asian and world history and upper-division major electives and graduate courses in Asian history (geographical and chronological coverage open), to supervise undergraduate research, and to contribute to our university-wide interdisciplinary programs. The successful candidate will be expected to be familiar with on-ground, hybrid, and online teaching pedagogies and fulfill additional faculty duties related to student learning and support (such as mentoring of students in high-impact experiences).
Required Qualifications: This position requires a PhD or late-stage ABD in Asian History or closely related field. A PhD is required to attain the rank of Assistant Professor. If initial hire is made at the instructor level, successful applicant is expected to complete the PhD by December 2025.
Applicants will be evaluated on:
- Academic qualifications.
- Evidence of, or potential for, success in teaching excellence in Asian and world history surveys; a variety of major elective and required courses, including research courses and senior capstone; and graduate seminars.
- Evidence of, or potential for, mentoring high-impact experiences, such as research at both the undergraduate and graduate level; engaging students in project-based learning; and teaching in desirable subfields (e.g., gender, digital, disability, environmental history, museum studies, or international studies) or geography (including GIS).
- Evidence of commitment to liberal arts education, with focus on undergraduate student development and accomplishment.
- Evidence of, or potential for, developing critical-thinking and problem-solving skills in undergraduates.
- Evidence of, or potential for, providing effective academic advice and mentorship to undergraduate majors.
- Evidence of, or potential for, interdisciplinary and/or cross-disciplinary teaching, including contributing to required freshmen (Self & Society, Truman Symposium) and junior (Junior Interdisciplinary Seminar) campus-wide initiatives and interdisciplinary minors.
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal skills
- Compatibility with the department’s needs; complementing existing faculty strengths in terms of class coverage
Compensation and Rank: Salary for this position is $48,500 at the Assistant Professor level; benefits package includes health insurance, retirement contributions, and reimbursed assistance for moving expenses.
Program: The Department of History is part of the School of Social and Cultural Studies. The department has 6 full-time faculty members, approximately 90 undergraduate majors, and 20 minors. The department also offers courses in Truman’s Dialogues curriculum and provides support classes for a number of pre-professional programs, including the Masters in Education program. The Community: Located in northeast Missouri, Kirksville is a cultural and economic hub in the region. In addition to being the home of Truman, Kirksville is the birthplace of osteopathic medicine and features a medical school, dental school and community college, and the Kirksville School District is consistently recognized for academic excellence.
