The Centre for Urban Network Evolutions (UrbNet) and the School of Culture and Society, Aarhus University, invite applications for an associate professorship (tenured position) in the archaeology of urban societies and their networks.
The position is located at either the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies or the Department of Classical Studies, depending on the research profile of the person appointed. The successful applicant will also be affiliated with the Centre for Urban Network Evolutions (UrbNet), Aarhus University. UrbNet is expected to operate until July 2025. After this period, the position will remain embedded in the School of Culture and Society.
The associate professorship is a tenured, full-time position commencing 1 September 2023.

The successful applicant should be able to demonstrate competence within the scope of UrbNet’s research programme, and a research plan should be submitted which aligns with the centre’s initiatives – preferably concentrated on one of the centre’s main regional areas. Applicants should have a keen interest in engaging in visionary research bridging disciplines, while focusing on the humanities-based core research agendas pursued by the centre.
Apart from carrying out research and contributing to the overall research agenda of UrbNet, the successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to the academic environment at the School of Culture and Society, including teaching and coordinating courses (BA, MA and PhD), as well as taking part in talent development and knowledge exchange according to Aarhus University’s overall strategy.

The position
We are looking for an innovative and dedicated candidate whose research focuses on the archaeology of urban societies, e.g. material culture studies, comparative analysis, fieldwork, archaeological science or environmental archaeology. UrbNet is an interdisciplinary research initiative exploring the evolution of urbanism and urban networks from the Hellenistic Period to the Middle Ages, and the centre is funded as a Centre of Excellence by the Danish National Research Foundation (see http://urbnet.au.dk/).The successful applicant should be able to demonstrate competence within the scope of UrbNet’s research programme, and a research plan should be submitted which aligns with the centre’s initiatives – preferably concentrated on one of the centre’s main regional areas. Research
The successful applicant is expected to develop and head research projects on topics of relevance to the archaeology of urban societies and networks from the Hellenistic Period to the Middle Ages. The person appointed to the position will also be expected to participate in collective research projects and pursue external research funding.Education
Depending on his/her expertise, the successful applicant is expected to teach courses at one or both archaeology departments (the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies and/or the Department of Classical Studies, respectively) at the School of Culture and Society, Faculty of Arts. This entails (a) participating in teaching general studies courses for archaeology students and (b) having primary responsibility for one or more of these courses in the relevant departmental programmes.Talent development
The successful applicant is expected to supervise PhD students and contribute to the development and implementation of PhD courses in the field of archaeology.Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree in archaeology or equivalent qualifications at an international level and must document qualifications corresponding to the completion of an assistant professorship.Applicants must moreover be able to document:
- Relevant academic publications at the highest international level
- Research in archaeology on topics relevant to the UrbNet research agenda
- Participation in relevant national and international networks
- Experience of interdisciplinary collaboration (notably with disciplines represented at UrbNet)
- The ability to teach courses within the framework of classical or/and historical archaeology at undergraduate and graduate level
- Experience with securing external funding for research projects
- Experience of heading/participating in archaeological fieldwork
