The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) African American Studies Program in the College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a renewable Non-Tenure Earning (NTE) Assistant Professor with promotion opportunities. We are recruiting applications from scholars specializing in African American Studies (Black or Diasporic Studies) or related fields.
The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in African American Studies (highly preferred) or a closely related field. The candidate must have a Ph.D. before the employment start date of August 14, 2023. Qualified applicants must have teaching experience with evidence of effective teaching in African American Studies or a related field. The teaching load for this position is four courses per semester. The successful candidate will be required to teach the introductory course with additional courses based on the candidate’s area of specialization. Teaching assignments will include general courses in both online and traditional formats. There must be a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have experience advising students, student recruitment, and program development.
Required Qualifications: The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in African American Studies (highly preferred) or a closely related field. The candidate must have a Ph.D. prior to the appointment. Qualified applicants must have teaching experience with a successful record of effective teaching in African American Studies or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have experience advising students, student recruitment, and program development to assist the Program Director in continued program building.
The African American Studies Program’s history extends back to the 1970s when the first Black Studies History class was offered at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. In 2000, a Bachelor of Arts degree in African American Studies was approved. The approved Program was unique because it was the only degree-granting African American Studies Program in Alabama. The African American Studies Program at UAB is currently the only one of two degrees granting AAS Programs in Alabama. Throughout its evolution over the past twenty-three years, the African American Studies Program has been committed to producing scholars and citizens equipped to engage the world and create positive change effectively, critically, and actively. Graduates reflect the remarkable opportunities completing a BA in African American Studies can afford. Program graduates have excelled in careers in many fields, including social and behavioral sciences, medicine, education, and engineering.
The African American Studies Program offers a B.A. degree and academically prepares students to pursue advanced degrees in graduate or professional schools or assume professional positions in related fields. It is an interdisciplinary program with award-winning Instructors that draw on courses from African American Studies, History, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, Political Science, English, and Public Health. Students may pursue an area of emphasis in Minority and Global Public Health/Social Justice, Historical Investigation and Cultural Awareness, or the History and Culture of Afro-Caribbean and Latino People.
