POSITION: full-time, tenure-track position in the Communication & Media Studies Department in SUNY Cortland’s School of Arts & Sciences at the rank of instructor or assistant professor depending on degree completion status at time of appointment.

To promote and support our inclusive community, SUNY Cortland is proud to announce the posting of a tenure-track assistant professor position in media and culture in the Communication & Media Studies Department with a joint appointment to a two-year term in SUNY Cortland’s Diversity Faculty Fellows Program. The aim of this program is to attract diverse faculty of promise to our campus whose work in their discipline is integrated with a demonstrated commitment to a diversity of thought and experience in both their personal and scholarly pursuits. Assistant professors with joint appointments to the Diversity Faculty Fellows Program will help support the infusion of topics related to equity and inclusion in the departmental and/or university-wide curriculum.
During their initial two-year appointment as a Diversity Faculty Fellow, the assistant professor will receive a reduced teaching load of 12 credits per year (6 credits per semester) and will be assigned a mentor to support their professional development. In addition, they will participate in a campus-based professional development program with other Diversity Faculty Fellows from across the campus designed specifically to further their growth and ensure their success in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service. As part of their teaching load, the successful candidate will be given the opportunity to teach at least one course a year which addresses equity and inclusion as part of its content. The two-year appointment within the Diversity Faculty Fellows Program is counted towards tenure and promotion.
As full-time faculty members at SUNY Cortland, assistant professors within the Diversity Faculty Fellows Program will be expected to maintain a routine presence on campus to support the campus values of Focus on the Students, Integrity, and Intellectual Life as well as serve the campus priorities of Academic Excellence, Transformational Education, Well-being, and the Maximization of Resources.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach a reduced load of 12 credits per year (6 credits per semester) for the first two years of their position. Included as part of the teaching load will be the opportunity to teach at least one course a year which addresses equity and inclusion as part of its content. Prepare and teach undergraduate courses in Communication & Media Studies courses such as Race and Gender Stereotypes or Introduction to Media Literacy as well as develop innovative courses on media and diversity, particularly in the areas of Africana, Caribbean, or Latina/o media experiences. Develop and maintain an active and productive scholarly agenda with an academic focus on media and culture, particularly in the areas of Africana, Caribbean, or Latina/o media experiences.. Provide service to the Communication & Media Studies Department, school, university, community, and profession. Support the infusion of topics related to equity and inclusion in the departmental and/or college-wide curriculum. Participate in a mentoring process with an assigned mentor to support professional development. Participate in a professional learning community designed specifically to further growth and ensure success in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service. Participate in the SUNY Diversity Conference each year of the fellowship. Provide scheduled office hours and support students outside of the classroom in at least one of the following ways: acting as academic advisor, serving as advisor to student organizations, and supervising student assistants, research assistants, or other internship experiences.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or doctoral candidate, all but dissertation (ABD) in Communication, Media, Cinema, or closely related field (Note: ABD candidates must have a completed master’s degree. PhD candidates who will not complete prior to their initial appointment will be hired at the rank of instructor and may be promoted to assistant professor rank upon completion.); demonstrated academic, professional and/or personal experience in engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion; and an academic focus on media and culture, particularly in the areas of Africana, Caribbean, or Latina/o media experiences;
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Relevant teaching experience in Communication, Media, Cinema, or closely related field at the college level; evidence of an active research agenda; and/or an early career scholar seeking to gain experience in a full-time faculty position in a supportive, inclusive environment.
