Position: | Assistant Professor |
The Amherst College Department of Religion seeks a scholar of ancient Christianity and/or Judaism for a full-time one-year visiting appointment at the rank of visiting assistant professor, beginning on July 1, 2023. The candidate’s research and teaching interests should center upon one or more of the following areas: Christianity through late antiquity; Second Temple Judaism; and Rabbinics. Within these fields, scholars working on gender and sexuality, responses to empire, and material studies are especially welcome to apply. The candidate will be expected to teach two courses in the fall and two courses in the spring, which may include a general introduction to the study of religion and the theory and methods of the study of religion. The candidate may also advise honors theses.
Within the last decade, Amherst College has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race, and nationality. Nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell Grant recipients; 45percent of our students identify as domestic students of color; and 10 percent of our students are international students. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexuality, and religion.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in hand by the start of the appointment. An application letter (including brief descriptions of four possible courses), C.V., one sample syllabus, and three confidential letters of recommendation should be submitted electronically to http://apply.interfolio.com/119333. Review of applications will begin on February 6, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.
