84000: Translating the Words of the Buddha (www.84000.co) invites applications for the full-time position of Research Editor specializing in Buddhist tantra.
The Research Editor will join our growing team of scholars engaged in translating the Tibetan Kangyur and Tengyur into English. We are looking for a scholar who specializes in Buddhist tantra and who has previously produced translations of tantric literature into English from Tibetan and/or Sanskrit.
The primary activity of the Research Editor is to edit translations of tantric texts from the Kangyur and Tengyur. In addition, the Research Editor will contribute to the research and outreach activities of 84000. This includes working closely with the editorial committee as well as the translators and other editors working for 84000.
The Research Editor job is a remote position with flexible working hours, and we offer a competitive salary and benefits. In addition to editorial work, the Research Editor will also have time allotted for personal research and publication projects.
84000 is a 100-year project (currently in its thirteenth year), so we are looking for scholars who value long-term professional relationships and thrive in a friendly and stimulating research environment.
84000 has already published translations of 240 texts from the Kangyur on our website, where they can be freely accessed. Translation of the Tengyur is currently being initiated, and this activity will also expand over the coming years.
Qualifications and Experience
- PhD degree in a related field
- Native-level proficiency in English
- Proficiency in both classical Tibetan and Sanskrit
- Broad familiarity with Buddhist tantric literature
- Knowledge of living Buddhist cultures
