Dartmouth Digital History Initiative Postgraduate Fellowship
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | New Hampshire, United States |
Position: | Fellow |
Dartmouth College invites applications for a Postgraduate Fellow to work with the Dartmouth Digital History Initiative (DDHI), a project that connects oral history and the digital humanities. Since our launch in 2019, the DDHI team has successfully developed prototype digital tools and methods for encoding and visualizing data drawn from oral history archives. In 2023, the DDHI will embark on a new two-year collaboration with the Oral History Metadata Synchronizer (OHMS), the premier platform for enhancing access to digital oral history collections. This collaboration will produce a new version of OHMS that will incorporate the DDHI’s tools and methods, providing OHMS users with new capabilities to produce maps, timelines, and other data visualizations. This collaboration and the associated postgraduate fellowship are funded by a Digital Humanities Advancement Grant (Level III) provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
As project manager for this collaboration, the DDHI Postgraduate Fellow will be in residence at Dartmouth College and will join a team of historians, archivists, and digital humanists from Dartmouth and the University of Kentucky (the home of OHMS). Reporting to the DDHI Director, the fellow will manage all major components of the collaboration. This includes coordination of the DDHI’s work with the OHMS director and with AVP, the information technology firm that will develop the new features of the OHMS platform. In this capacity, the fellow will join our efforts to add Named Entity Recognition (NER) capabilities to OHMS, and also support the development of new data visualization tools for OHMS. The fellow will coordinate the activities of our external Advisory Panel, comprised of scholars and specialists with expertise in oral history and the digital humanities; duties also include supervision of a team of undergraduate research assistants. Finally, the fellow will join a Dartmouth faculty member in co-teaching “Dartmouth Black Lives,” a course that combines learning in oral history, the digital humanities, Dartmouth history, and African American history.
The tenure of this fellowship will begin on May 1, 2023 or later and run for 23 months. The position is a Dartmouth College benefits-eligible position and the annual salary is $56,000. The position includes funds for computer equipment and for professional development.
