Washington College’s Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience seeks applicants for the position of Associate Director for Experiential Learning and Programs.

The interdisciplinary Starr Center is dedicated to fostering innovative approaches to American history and culture at the local and national levels. Our current programs include a major digital humanities project on African American history (in partnership with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and others); oral history; a book award; visiting fellowships; a new civic engagement program, and a myriad of hands-on opportunities in public history, humanities, and civic engagement for undergraduates.

Reporting directly to the Director of the Starr Center, this is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. The Associate Director has primary responsibility for developing, organizing, and leading experiential learning opportunities for Washington College students, serving as an educator, supervisor, and mentor. The programs under their purview will include on-site and off-site internships, exploratory trips, and research projects, bringing students into the local community and broader world. In collaboration with other Starr Center staff and on- and off-campus cosponsors, the Associate Director will also work on Center-sponsored public programs. They will collaborate with Washington College’s admissions office on the Center’s participation in recruitment and outreach.

A bachelor’s degree and a strong background in education and American history/culture are required. Professional background in education and/or experiential learning — whether in higher ed, schools, museums, outdoor education, travel programs, or other settings — is also desired. A successful applicant will be energetic, resourceful, and outgoing, able to engage successfully with a diverse community of students.

Washington College is a small liberal-arts institution that emphasizes close student/faculty collaboration, civic engagement, and experiential learning. Established in 1782, it is the nation’s tenth-oldest college and the first one chartered in the newly independent United States. The college is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, a region rich in American history, approximately 90 minutes from Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.
