About MRU

Founded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal has carved out a distinct niche by offering smaller class sizes, a robust liberal education and unique undergraduate programs. Currently, more than 15,000 credit students choose from 13 bachelor degrees and 38 majors.

Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut'ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is "Mohkinstsis," which we now call the city of Calgary. The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation.

About the Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts is home to six academic departments: Economics, Justice & Policy Studies; English, Languages & Cultures; Humanities; Interior Design; Psychology; and Sociology & Anthropology. Arts currently offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts with six majors, Bachelor of Arts—Criminal Justice, and Bachelor of Interior Design.

The successful candidate will be a member of the Department of Humanities. The Department of Humanities currently offers a BA in History and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies, as well as minors in Ancient and Medieval Studies, Art History, Canadian Studies, Humanities, Indigenous Studies, Linguistics, Philosophy, and Religious Studies.

About the Department Women’s and Gender Studies

Women's and Gender Studies (WGST) at MRU is committed to intersectional, anti-racist, decolonial, and anti- oppressive pedagogies and to providing a brave learning space for students where they are encouraged to think critically, creatively, and self-reflexively in the pursuit of a more just world. We offer approximately 25 WGST courses each year to more than 850 undergraduate students registered in programs across campus. MRU offers a minor in WGST, and Women's and Gender Studies makes an important contribution to the university’s general education curriculum.

About the Role

We invite applications for one position, subject to final budgetary approval, at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023 (negotiable). The successful candidate will be a teacher-scholar broadly trained in gender, women’s, sexuality, and/or feminist studies with expertise in field(s) that complement but do not duplicate those already represented. Fields of specialty are open, and the position will remain open until filled. We especially invite candidates who will strengthen our program’s commitment to social justice, anti-racist scholarship, and feminist technoculture, science, and/or health studies. We are also interested in:

• Expertise in the areas of Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and/or other Women-of-Colour feminisms, including Indigeneity, critiques of settler colonialism, and transnational feminisms
• The politics of the body, including health inequalities, transfeminism, sexualities, and disability/crip studies
• Environmental justice, including Indigenous, anti-racist and queer approaches
• Community-engaged practices, social justice organizing, politics of community and care

WGST faculty value interdisciplinary teaching, scholarship, and experiential learning that further MRU’s commitment to diversity, equity, justice, and inclusive excellence. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate intersectional, innovative, community-engaged, and cross-disciplinary approaches to research and teaching within a liberal education context, and who value mentoring students who are first-generation, limited-income, and from historically underrepresented groups in post-secondary education.

New faculty at MRU are hired into one of two work patterns. The teaching/service pattern (TS) has a focus on teaching and service, and comes with a 4/4 teaching load. The teaching/scholarship/service pattern (TSS) has a focus on teaching and service, with the requirement that the faculty member also be involved in a research program, and comes with a 3/3 teaching load. There is an option to change work patterns after tenure. We are hiring into the TSS work pattern with this position.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Women's, Gender and/or Sexuality Studies. Applications may also be considered from candidates with a Ph.D. in a related discipline in the humanities or social sciences with a research focus on issues relevant to the field(s) of Women’s, Gender, and/or Sexuality Studies. Ph.D. must be completed by the date of appointment (7/1/2023).
• Evidence of successful teaching at the university level that includes feminist, intersectional, and decolonizing pedagogical approaches.
• Ability and commitment to mentor students in community-based learning, undergraduate research, and preparation for professional experiences.
• Evidence of success in scholarly productivity, which can include creative practices and public intellectual engagement.
• Demonstrated intercultural competence with diverse groups in teaching, research, and/or service.
• Ability and commitment to teach core and elective courses in WGST, including courses in the candidate's primary areas of expertise as well as upper division electives as needed.
