The African and African Diaspora Studies faculty is recognized nationally and internationally for its expertise. Faculty specializations include racial identity, folklore, African religions, gender relations, social movements, racism, foreign relations, public health, international finance and trade in African countries, economics in the Black community, and transnational migration. The department is actively engaged in interdisciplinary work with a number of units on campus including Global Studies, Ethnic Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Religious Studies, Women’s Studies, Childhood and Adolescent Studies, Urban Studies, the Institute of World Affairs, Cultures and Communities, Anthropology, and the Center for 21st Century Studies.
The department is also interested in further contributing to the university’s active research interest in Milwaukee history. A few of the possible resources for such work include the UWM Library’s award-winning archives, including the March on Milwaukee Civil Rights History Project digital archives; the Wisconsin Community Activism Now project, created by researchers from the UWM Office of Undergraduate Research and faculty in the Cultures and Communities Program; and the American Geographical Society collection. The Department of African and African Diaspora Studies has connections to (as well as student internships in some) local community institutions, such as the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, America’s Black Holocaust Museum, and MKE Film Black Lens.
Job Summary
The Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is seeking to hire one Assistant or Associate Professor with expertise in African diaspora cultures and societies, with emphasis on Urban United States History, to begin August 21, 2023. We welcome strong candidates from Africana Studies, History, and related fields in cultural studies or the humanities. Applicants must have demonstrated potential and interest to conduct research and excel in teaching. Ph.D. is required at the time of appointment.
We have a particular interest in a candidate who can contribute to MA and PhDs programs and work with graduate students in the department. A successful candidate is expected to maintain a strong research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, work with graduate students, and engage in departmental and university service. Expertise in urban United States history/studies, as well as an interest in applying that expertise to the study of Milwaukee, is preferred but not required.
The teaching load will be 2:2. Teaching responsibilities include lower-level survey courses in African American history as well as upper-level and graduate seminars. Ability to develop an African Diaspora history course is also welcome. Candidates are encouraged to articulate their potential contribution to the department with reference to its existing strengths or gaps.
Minimum Qualifications
- PhD by time of appointment (September 2023) in Africana Studies, History, or related field
- Excellence in teaching
- Evidence of a strong scholarly research agenda in African American history
- Commitment to departmental and university service.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing courses and /or curricula in African American history
- Experience mentoring students from under-represented groups
- Potential future research interest in African American Urban History of Milwaukee
