Organization Description: The American Antiquarian Society, founded in 1812, is a learned society and national research library dedicated to collecting, preserving, and providing access to the printed record of the United States through 1900. The Society’s collections are used by scholars, students, creative and performing artists, writers, and researchers in many fields studying and working with American history and culture. Position Purpose:
The Director of Scholarly Programs and Partnerships manages the Society’s Program in the History of the Book in American Culture (PHBAC) as well as the Society’s Center for Historic American Visual Culture (CHAViC) and plays a leading role in creating and administering partnerships. The Director of Scholarly Programs and Partnerships acts as an ambassador for AAS to the larger academic community through conferences, programs, and publication. This position reports to and works closely with the Vice President for Academic and Public Programs to broaden the community of researchers, including underserved populations, and to engage diverse publics for all programming.
Main responsibilities (not exhaustive):
- Develop, promote, and coordinate seminars, workshops, and conferences
- Provide intellectual and general support for public programming
- Engage with and represent AAS in the academic fields within the humanities
- Teach classes and workshops related to programming
- Assist with operation of fellowship programs
- Participate in grant applications as appropriate
- Create and maintain opportunities for K-12, college and graduate student engagement with collections and programs
Skills & Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills with a wide range of constituents
- A PhD or equivalent in a related topical field
- An ability to develop curricula and to teach on a variety of intellectual levels
- A knowledge of the trends in book history, visual culture, public humanities
- An understanding of the range of humanities research methodologies
- An ability to work as an integral part of the Programs team as well as an ability to work independently and collegially
- Demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and access in their daily work (please refer to our IDEA statement on our website)
Travel: Yes, related to planned events, conferences and partner meetings
Minimum Education: PhD or equivalent
Language Skills: Ability to read, understand, speak and write in Standard English; ability to communicate effectively in English with individuals in person, over the telephone, and via the printed word.
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Duties require periods of standing, walking, sitting.
Duties require occasional periods of climbing or balancing, pulling/pushing items including book trucks with materials, lifting/carrying items weighing up to approximately 30 lbs., reaching with arms and hands. Vision and hearing at or correctable to “normal ranges.” Other physical tasks include use of hands for basic grasping/manipulation, use of hands for fine manipulation, occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, and keyboarding. Physical duties are subject to change. Must be able to transport oneself to work-related meetings, workshops, conferences, etc.

Work Environment:
Most duties are performed indoors in office environment with artificial light and cool, thermostatically controlled temperatures. The noise level is low. May be exposed to dust, mold, and/or other organic material or other irritants. Hazards are considered minor and controllable.
Hours: This is an exempt, full-time, 35-hour per week position generally between the hours of 9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. A workweek is 40 hours with a one lunch per day. There will be some nights and weekends for events, planned in advance.
Compensation and benefits: The range for this position is $72,000 to $82,000.
