The Africana Studies Program in the College of Social Sciences at California State University, Fresno is seeking applicants for two positions in Africana Studies, one at the Assistant Professor rank (Pan-Africanism & Black Political Thought) and one as an open rank position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level (Black Protest) with a Fall 2023 start date. For both positions we seek a general specialist capable of teaching both introductory and upper-division courses in Africana Studies.
The assistant professor position will have a research emphasis in any of the following areas: Pan-Africanism and Black Political Thought, Afro-Latinx communities, and/or Sub-Saharan African history and cultures.
The open rank position will have a research emphasis in at least one of the following areas: Black protest movements (including prison abolition), community-based issues, Black-Latinx and/or Black-Indigenous coalition politics, and hip hop as Black resistance.
Specific courses that the successful candidates could teach include Black Popular Culture, Black Protest, Hip Hop Culture, African American Community, Race Relations, Law, Policing and Black Communities, Contemporary African Societies, and African Cultural Perspectives as well as new topics courses developed by the successful candidate to support AFRS participation and collaborations in Ethnic Studies, a new general education area required by California State University system. Teaching responsibilities would include lower and upper-division courses, multiple course sections in general education including Area F (Ethnic Studies) as mandated by AB 1460, and possible cross-listing with other Ethnic Studies units in the College of Social Sciences. Besides Africana Studies, other Ethnic Studies programs include: American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, and the Department of Chicano and Latin American Studies.
About Our Program: Africana Studies is generally defined as a study of the historical and cultural experiences of African peoples from a variety of academic disciplines. The program uses an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective to illuminate the connectedness of the human experience and provide culturally-appropriate knowledge and skills necessary to understand the experiences of African peoples all over the world. Qualifications:
Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):
- An earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree in Africana Studies, or a closely related field is required.
- Applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For employment, the doctorate must be completed by 8/1/2023.
