The Department of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professorship in twentieth-century African American history, to begin July 1, 2023. We welcome applications from scholars who research any aspect of the African-American experience in the twentieth century, with a preference for candidates who focus on one or more of the following: gender, culture, social life, social movements, environment, identity, and community. We are especially interested in candidates who engage African American history in a transnational frame. We are also interested in candidates whose work connects with scholars of comparative race and ethnicity and African and African-diaspora history in our department and with scholars in UCSB's Department of Black Studies. The department seeks candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, professional activity, and service. The successful candidate will contribute to the department's undergraduate and graduate curriculum.
