Assistant Professor of the history of the African Diaspora with a specialization in migration and/or refugee studies. Tenure-track, 9-month position

Position:

The College of Liberal Arts invites applications for a tenure-track, 9-month position for an Assistant Professor of the history of the African Diaspora with a specialization in migration and/or refugee studies in the Department of History beginning August 2023.

Qualifications:

PhD in History or related fields required. ABD applicants considered, but appointment will be at the ‘Instructor’ rank and all degree requirements must be completed by February 1, 2024. Research specialization in migration and/or refugee studies of the African Diaspora. Demonstrated excellence in teaching in applicant’s field of specialization. Demonstrated scholarship and active research agenda. Proven ability to work with and be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse student body and to support the University’s Diversity Strategic Plan.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and develop upper- and lower-level courses in the History of the African Diaspora and in migration and/or refugee studies as well as in their other areas of specialization. The successful candidate will also contribute to related programs, including the African & African American Studies minor and a planned Interdisciplinary PhD in development in the area of human, social and environmental security. Towson University and the Department of History are transitioning to the research-intensive R2 status and candidates will be expected to contribute to this move and to pursue grant-based scholarship as outlined in the University’s mission and strategic plan. The normal teaching load is 3-3, with a reduced 2-3 load for the first year and additional opportunities for reduced teaching load in future years. The successful candidate will commit to active participation and service to the department, college, and university.

The letter of application should contain the following: a description of research and a description of one upper-division course and one lower-division course applicant would be prepared to teach. A writing sample, unofficial graduate transcripts and letters of professional references will be requested from those candidates who advance to preliminary interviews.
