Job Summary:
The Human Rights Advisor is a subject matter expert and point of contact for the university community. The Advisor provides support, information, and advice to members of the university community with respect to human-rights policies, practices, interactions and environments at UFV.
The incumbent promotes human rights and responsibilities, and provides mediation and conflict resolution support to the university. The Human Rights Advisor is responsible for confidential case management and responds to complaints through a sensitive, intersectional, and trauma informed lens, given the diverse impact of human rights violations on persons belonging to historically marginalized communities.
In conjunction with the Director, EDI, the Human Rights Advisor works collaboratively across the university to build equity literacy and capacity through the development and delivery of EDI strategies, programs, projects, and proactive education and training activities, including the creation of tools and resources to infuse EDI and anti-racism.
Qualifications:
- Four (4) year degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a relevant field such as Law, Political Science, International Relations, Social Sciences.
- Minimum of five (5) years proven experience working in the areas of human rights/social justice/human services.
- Skills and experience in conflict resolution, advocacy, mediation, consultation and support to complainants and respondents of Human Rights complaints.
- Experience providing professional advice within a policy-informed context.
- Demonstrated de-escalation response to conflict.
- Ability to exercise discretion, respond with tact and empathy, and remain impartial when dealing with sensitive information.
- Experience in a college, university, community, or agency is an asset.
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff and senior academic administrators about issues facing students in crisis and make recommendations.
- Strong facilitation skills and experience conducting training on human rights, anti-racism and EDI content to diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant human rights and discrimination legislation.
- Strong understanding of anti-racism and EDI and the experiences of equity deserving groups, with a knowledge of relevant legislation and proven practices, and experience working in a culturally relevant and responsive manner to address needs of Indigenous, Black, and equity-deserving groups.
- Microsoft Office, excel, and PowerPoint skills.
