Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Ancient History/Classics - History of Sexuality
The Department of History at James Madison University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in Ancient History with a preference for candidates whose research and teaching focuses on the history of sexuality. Candidates must hold a PhD in History or a related discipline with significant coursework in History by the time of appointment. The position will begin in August 2023.
The College of Arts and Letters, in which the Department of History is located, enrolls over 3400 undergraduate majors and about 150 graduate students across ten academic units in the humanities, social sciences, and communication studies. Home to several interdisciplinary centers and institutes, the College employs 270 full-time faculty. It is a university leader in student and faculty diversity and belonging and has made significant faculty investments in racial and social justice, Latinx studies, and African-American studies. It embraces the teacher-scholar model, supporting excellent teaching, innovative service, and strong programs of research and creative inquiry across the disciplines. Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will teach courses in large and small classroom settings that serve many audiences including general education, the history major, the classics minor, and the history department’s MA program. The position provides opportunities for collaboration across the university in programs including Art History; the Classical Studies Interdisciplinary Minor; Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS); an emerging minor in LGBTQ studies; and in digital humanities.
Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate commitment to collaboration in building an equitable and inclusive environment and to supporting diversity initiatives with their research, teaching and service. The History Department, comprised of 28 full-time faculty, values the ability to think deeply, to wonder and investigate, exploring the relevance of the past and finding its resonance in the present. Candidates must hold a PhD in History or a related discipline with significant coursework in History by the time of appointment.
