The Center for Asian Studies at the University of Colorado Boulder invites applications for the position of Director, Program for Teaching East Asia (TEA). Now in its 38th year, the Program for Teaching East Asia is a national grant-funded program with the mission of expanding and enriching education about Asia at the K-12 level through professional development for educators, curriculum development, and educational resource dissemination.
The TEA Director is responsible for all aspects of programming, including fundraising, grant administration, new program development, and teaching. The Director is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with East Asian studies specialists within the university and beyond, including university departments and centers, K-12 educators and school districts, and other organizations that specialize in Asia-related policy, education, and public programming.
TEA administers one of seven national coordinating sites for the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA), which celebrates 25 years in 2022. The TEA Director serves as Director of this NCTA national site. In that capacity, the Director is responsible for financial oversight and reporting; developing NCTA annual programming that maintains a balance and variety of professional development courses to meet the needs of K-12 educators; pursuing innovations to enhance NCTA programs at CU; supervising course offerings; securing and supporting contract instructors; developing new courses; and teaching occasional professional development courses for NCTA’s educator audience. As NCTA national site director, the Director collaborates with six other NCTA directors in the administration and direction of this national initiative.
The successful candidate for this position will possess a strong knowledge of East Asia and current directions in the field of Asian studies; an understanding of the context, needs, and opportunities for strengthening the study of Asia at the pre-college level, both statewide and nationally; a commitment to pursuing new directions in Asian studies educational outreach generally and teacher professional development specifically; and the intention to adopt new educational and information technologies to maximize the impact and benefits of TEA programs. Minimum requirements: PhD in relevant field or Master's degree plus five years relevant experience; five years experience teaching to K-12 educators, K-12 students and/or post-secondary students; strong knowledge of East Asia and current directions in the field of Asian studies; K-12 curriculum development experience; demonstrated experience in course development and pedagogy for adult learners; an understanding of the precollege educational environment specific to the context, needs, and opportunities for strengthening the study of Asia in K-12 education; speaking ability in one East Asian language. Also required: Excellent written and oral communication; program administration skills; minimum 3 years of non-profit or institution-based program administration and grant financial management; proven success in grant-writing.
