CCRI’s Social Sciences department comprises 18 full-time faculty members teaching Economics, History, Philosophy, Political Science, and Sociology. We are a service department supporting CCRI’s general education curriculum and degree programs across the college.
Job Summary
The Community College of Rhode Island seeks a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of History to teach the following undergraduate courses: World Civilizations and courses related to an area of regional specialty in Latin America, Africa, Asia, or the Middle East. The Assistant Professor will join a dynamic, diverse, and collegial department, participate in curriculum development, and serve on departmental and college committees.
This position’s start date is in January 2023 (non-deferrable and non-negotiable).

- Manage conflict effectively in both classroom situations and relationships with faculty and administrative peers.
Disciplinary Expertise:
- Plan, develop, present, and modify History courses from proposal to syllabus, to classroom, to assessment, to evaluation.
- Convey knowledge effectively to students.
- Create new history courses.
- Continue professional growth as a historian.
Instructional Skills:
- Teach World Civilizations and courses related to an area of regional expertise: Latin America, Africa, or the Middle East.
- Use advanced technologies to expand student resources and learning opportunities.
- Assess student learning according to demonstrated mastery of student learning objectives.
- Demonstrate creativity and flexibility in pedagogical approaches to a diverse population of students and peers.
Service to the College:
- Attend and actively participate in departmental meetings.
- Collaborate with peers on curriculum development and assessment.
- Practice a collegial approach to self- and peer evaluations.
- Travel and teach at multi-campus locations, as required by the department.
- Actively participate in college governance, college-wide task forces, and/or student organizations.
Minimum Requirements:
- A Master’s Degree in History with at least 12 graduate hours focused on Latin America, Africa, or the Middle East, is required.
- A minimum of one (1) year of independent teaching experience, is required.
The most suitably qualified candidate will possess the following:
- An earned Doctorate Degree is required.
- Experience teaching at the collegiate level, especially community college.
- Experience teaching courses in World Civilizations and an area of regional specialty.
- Experience teaching online and hybrid courses.
- Experience with curriculum development, student learning outcomes, and effective assessments to measure them.
- Experience with Blackboard or other learning management systems.
