1: Department Chair, Advanced Associate Professor or Professor
:The Ohio State University seeks a chair who will provide ambitious and innovative leadership for its Department of African American and African Studies. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2023. The chair will serve as the administrative head of the department, with oversight of faculty, staff, curriculum, budget, and strategic direction. The new chair will lead the way in defining and implementing a vision for the department that emerges from and centers the intellectual, social justice oriented, and pedagogical foundations of the discipline of Black Studies. The successful candidate will provide transparent leadership for the programs the department offers to undergraduate majors and minors, nonmajors, graduate students, and the community, guided by a spirit of engagement, compassion, and care. To this end, the ideal candidate will exhibit a demonstrated record of collaborative leadership and partnership that can help the department build cohesion, achieve institutional change, and further develop strong and sustainable programs that serve a broad variety of constituents on the campus and in the community.
The new chair will lead the faculty and staff in curriculum development, outreach, engagement, operations, and governance. The chair will be an advocate for the department, its faculty, and students, promoting and providing support and mentorship for scholarly activity and advancing the discipline of Black Studies more broadly. The chair should be poised to engage with students, faculty, staff, and alumni to build collaborations with arts and humanities departments and interdisciplinary initiatives across the College of Arts and Sciences and the broader university community, Ohio State’s five regional campuses, as well as with other organizations in Ohio and beyond. The director will work with university and community leaders to maximize the impact of the soon to be newly renovated Community Extension Center, and to maximize the advantages offered by the new general education program.
The successful candidate will be a dedicated educator and recognized scholar and/or practitioner with expertise in one or more areas of Black Studies. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a firm commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and have experience with research, educational, and community engagement programs that meet the needs of minoritized or underserved populations.
Qualifications:
· PhD in Black Studies or a related field.
· National/international record of scholarly achievement commensurate with the position of an advanced Associate Professor or Professor at The Ohio State University, including a record of scholarly achievement, teaching excellence at the post-secondary level, and professional service; and evidence of continued excellence in scholarly achievement.
· Demonstrated and effective leadership and administrative experience in academia, with desired experience in fundraising, budgeting, and management.
· Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and demonstrated ability to cultivate positive work relationships with students, colleagues, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
· Experience in leading change and the ability to work successfully across disciplines within a diverse and complex organization.
· Experience in graduate education and the ability to support and further develop the Department’s PhD and MA programs.
· Experience with successful collaborations, for example those with other academic units, community partners, and professional organizations.

2: Assistant Professor, Media Studies
The Department of African American and African Studies (AAAS) at The Ohio State University invites applications for a position in Media Studies. We are looking for a scholar at the rank of assistant professor, whose main research focuses on the environments of expressive Black Media. The focus genre, mode, and location of research should be derived from, and/or addressed to, the experiences and practices (historical and/or contemporary) that are identifiable with Black societies in their complex relations with others. An ability to integrate community work with Black communities in central Ohio in teaching and research practices is desirable.
This position is one of a cluster of three Race, Arts, and Creative Expressions tenure track hires in The Ohio State University’s Race, Inclusion and Social Equity (RAISE) initiative. The two other positions are in the departments of Dance and History of Art. The successful candidate will be expected to engage with other faculty in the Global Black Arts cluster.
Through the Race, Inclusion and Social Equity (RAISE) initiative, Ohio State is enhancing our world-class research program on race, inclusion, and social equity. Over the next decade, the university will add at least 50 tenure-track faculty members to existing scholars whose research can help to narrow social disparities in educational attainment, health outcomes, rates of incarceration, political representation, environmental impacts, and economic well-being. Adding scholars in focused areas will enhance the University’s outstanding faculty and inform solutions to intractable issues. RAISE is part of Ohio State’s larger initiative to expand the size and impact of Ohio State’s faculty over the coming decade, while also enhancing academic and personal resources to support Ohio State scholars, educators, and practitioners through all phases of their careers.

3: Assistant Professor, Political Economy of Race
The Department of African American and African Studies (AAAS) at The Ohio State University invites applications for a position in Political Economy of Race/Racism. We are looking for a scholar whose research combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to the analysis of racism, with an emphasis on the economics of discrimination in the US, though an interest in comparative economic histories and or analysis of the political economics of racism in other nations is a plus. The finalist is expected to actively contribute to the intellectual life and research profile of the department, including participation in the outreach activities of the Community Extension Center.

4: Assistant/Associate Professor, Immigration History
The Department of African American and African Studies (AAAS) and the Department of History at The Ohio State University invite applications for a position in the history of Black migrations. The Department seeks a scholar at the rank of assistant or associate professor whose research expertise examines 20th-century Black Migrations. We encourage applications from candidates with a wide range of approaches to this topic, including approaches that center the perspective of migrant communities and cultures, global history, Black/Africana Studies, African history, North American history, gender and sexuality studies, economic history, or histories of race or religion.
