Assistant/Associate/Full Professor in Infrastructure Studies
Institution Type: | College / University |
Location: | Qatar |
Position: | Non-Tenure Track Faculty |
Northwestern University in Qatar invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a full-time open rank interdisciplinary faculty appointment in Infrastructure Studies, to be appointed jointly in the Communication and Liberal Arts Programs.
We seek candidates with an active research agenda that focuses on interdisciplinary and interpretive critical perspectives on infrastructure with emphasis on the Global South—particularly South Asia, the Arab world, and/or Africa. Preference will be given to scholars whose research is comparative or transnational, who investigate such areas as infrastructure and the environment, geopolitics or cultural politics of infrastructure, infrastructure in daily life, popular imaginations of infrastructure, mobility and transportation, elemental media, digital infrastructures, and who include ethics, gender, race, and/or coloniality in their analysis. We expect successful candidates to have a Ph.D. in media studies, internet studies, communication studies, science and technology studies, or related interdisciplinary backgrounds, by the time of appointment, and to have linguistic competence and field experience in their research area.
NU-Q is a globally embedded institution: it is one of three campuses of Northwestern University (Chicago, Doha, Evanston) and one of several institutions in the Qatar Foundation’s Education City in Doha, Qatar. Our mission is to mentor and educate students to become creative, ethical, and impactful communicators across cultural and national boundaries. We are committed to a vibrant student life, academic excellence, and to high-level undergraduate student research and media making, particularly on the Global South. Located at the confluence of continents, NU-Q is a diverse global community with approximately 500 students from 60 countries.
Candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to our distinctive Institute for Advanced Study in the Global South (#IAS_NUQ), a community of evidence-based storytellers devoted to understanding the media, cultures, societies, politics, and history of the countries of the Global South. This includes mentoring our Undergraduate Global Fellows, participating in reading and research groups, and contributing to panels, seminars, conferences, and publications.
In addition to a demonstrated research track record commensurate with rank, or highly promising research trajectory for emerging scholars, applicants should show competence in working with globally diverse communities, a strong commitment to excellence in inclusive teaching and mentoring, and dedication to institutional service and shared governance. Responsibilities include teaching courses in the communication and liberal arts programs and elective courses that speak to their research field, as well as contributing to NU-Q’s curricular demands. These could include the required “Ways of Knowing” course, the Doha Seminar honors course, graduate seminars, executive education classes, or courses qualifying for our university’s growing number of interdisciplinary minors, such as Africana Studies, Film and Design, Middle East Studies, Media and Politics, and Strategic Communication.
NU-Q provides competitive compensation and benefits. The medium of instruction is English, but proficiency in Arabic in particular, or another regional language, is an advantage. Candidates with experience in US higher education as well as in the Arab region, women, and persons from underrepresented groups in academia are particularly encouraged to apply.
