Overview
The Department of History at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for an Assistant Professor in the History of the United States, with specialization in at least one of the following subfields (in no particular order): environmental history, Native American history, or history of the American West. This is a tenure-track, nine-month, academic year position, located at USU’s Uintah Basin Campus in Eastern Utah. The successful candidate can choose to work from either the Roosevelt or Vernal location. Teaching is the primary focus of this position, and the faculty member will be responsible for teaching six courses per year. These will include one or more of the History Department’s American history survey courses (HIST 1700, HIST 2700, and/or HIST 2710) as well as courses in the Department’s upper division curriculum. Given USU’s statewide mission, courses will be taught primarily in a distance format, including asynchronous online courses and synchronous hybrid courses with face-to-face and remote broadcast students. The department seeks a colleague who can show evidence of teaching excellence and scholarly productivity. The anticipated start date is August 2023.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Teach undergraduate American history survey courses
- Contribute to the Department’s upper division curriculum
- Teach courses using various delivery methods (online, broadcast, face-to-face)
- Conduct research in field of specialization
- Contribute to service in the Department, College, and at the Uintah Basin campus
Qualifications
- A PhD in US History by August 1, 2023, with specialization in environmental history, Native American history, or history of the American West
- Evidence of teaching excellence
- Evidence of scholarly productivity

Uintah Basin Campus Highlights
The Uintah Basin Campus provides excellent access to higher education for approximately 900 students at the Roosevelt and Vernal campuses as well as remote learning for students in rural Utah and at other campuses in the state. Located in one of the most diverse and dynamic regions of the state near the Colorado border, USU Uintah Basin also serves the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray reservation, expanding educational opportunities in a previously underserved region. The Uintah Basin covers almost 15,000 square miles of northeast Utah encompassing an asymmetric bowl east of the Wasatch Mountains and south of the Uintah Mountains. The economy of the area, once based on agriculture and mining, has diversified, and energy extraction and tourism are now major industries as well. Utah is an outdoor recreation paradise; local attractions include Dinosaur National Monument, Starvation Reservoir State Park, Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, and Uinta Wilderness area. Residents have easy access to spectacularly beautiful natural areas and a wide variety of recreational activities year-round, including world class hunting, fishing, rafting, and hiking. Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, as well as the southern Utah national parks and monuments, are also nearby.
