History of Science and Technology and Foundation Year Programs
University of King's College
Established in 1789, King's College is Canada's oldest chartered university and is associated with Dalhousie University. A small and extraordinarily lively academic community located in Halifax (Kjipuktuk), Nova Scotia, King's is known for its highly acclaimed interdisciplinary programs in the humanities, including its renowned Foundation Year Program, its professional programs in journalism and its fine arts program in creative writing. King’s is a community where students, faculty, alumni and staff work to bring greater understanding, creativity, and compassion to the world.
The History of Science and Technology Program (HOST) and the Foundation Year Program (FYP) at the University of King’s College invite applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing July 1, 2023. Candidates must have a PhD or be ABD. The focus for the appointment is “globalised modern science, technology and medicine” with an emphasis on decolonization and the interface of “non-Western” and “Western” knowledge.
The History of Science and Technology program, offered jointly by the University of King’s College and Dalhousie University, explores the cultural contexts of scientific knowledge from antiquity to the present. Our honours students complement their HOST studies at King's with a Dalhousie discipline, either in the humanities, social sciences, or the sciences. HOST students and faculty benefit from this close relationship with Dalhousie University, which is the largest research university in Eastern Canada. Our classes attract many students from the King’s Foundation Year Program, and from a broad range of faculties and departments at Dalhousie.
In recent years, HOST has recognised the key importance of re-imagining science, technology and the philosophy of nature as thoroughly global in its engagements and achievements, as well as recognizing the role and voices of local, non-Western, and indigenous knowledge systems. This appointment will play a key role in our continuing efforts to excel through diversifying the HOST teaching mission and curriculum. Applicants with demonstrated research profiles and teaching expertise in the intersections between Western and non-Western science (including indigenous knowledge), are invited to apply.
The primary location of the appointment will be the History of Science and Technology Program (2/3 appointment), with Foundation Year as a secondary home program (1/3 appointment). The Foundation Year is an interdisciplinary program for first year undergraduates, which considers the Western tradition (including works of literature, philosophy, religion, art and science) from the ancient world to the present. Thus, in addition to specialized expertise in globalised modern science as outlined above, candidates should have a broad competency and interest in liberal arts teaching.
The University of King’s College seeks to reverse the historic under-representation of equity-seeking groups among our faculty. Priority will be given to applications from those who would contribute to the diversification of our staff and faculty including, but not limited to women, Indigenous persons (especially Mi’kmaq), persons with disabilities, racialized persons, including persons of Black/African descent (especially African Nova Scotians), and persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity. Applicants are encouraged to identify themselves as belonging to such equity-deserving groups. Priority will be given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents.
The University of King’s College is a small teaching-intensive liberal arts university. Thus, while the successful candidate will be expected to engage actively in research and scholarship, demonstrated teaching excellence and a willingness to take on administrative duties at the program and faculty levels are essential. A complete application must include: a cover letter (directly addressing the scope of the appointment and the EDI initiatives outlined above); a curriculum vitae; a brief teaching dossier (including a teaching statement and relevant teaching evaluations); three letters of reference (sent directly by referees); a statement of current and future research projects/interests; one sample of scholarly work relevant to the specializations outlined above. Electronic applications are preferred and strongly encouraged.
