Historic New England, the oldest and largest regional heritage organization in the nation, is seeking applicants for a full-time Scholar-in-Residence to conduct academic research in support of our goal to be the premier organization where new areas of research, stories, interpretation, and programming are discovered and shared with today’s audiences.
This is a post-doctoral position in a uniquely interdisciplinary setting with the opportunity to work cross-team with Historic New England staff in areas of material culture, archives, preservation, architectural history, and visitor experience.
This Scholar-In-Residence is a one year term-limited, research-based position available to scholars in the humanities or social sciences. Under the supervision of the Study Center Manager, the scholar will work independently to research a proposed topic related to the Eustis Estate or Gilded Age architecture, landscape, decorative arts, or social history, with the goal of completing an academic work. Projects may be at any stage of development and are expected to be of value to both scholars and general audiences and contribute to a larger scholarly conversation.
Ideal candidates are scholars who will use this opportunity to publish or otherwise disseminate their research and are interested in using their research to educate and engage the public. While in residence, the scholar is also expected to be actively engaged in the intellectual life and outreach programs of the Study Center at the Eustis Estate and Historic New England at large.
The scholar will devote a full-time schedule (40 hours/week) to this position and will, in conjunction with the Study Center Manager, help supervise the work of two part-time research fellows. A residence is offered (but not required) in the form of a furnished one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment at the Eustis Estate in Milton, Mass. Office space with complete technology requirements will also be provided.
Historic New England welcomes applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and ideas who embrace and value diversity and inclusion.
