Assistant Professor in Classical Archaeology

The Department of History and Classical Studies, part of the School of Culture and Society at Aarhus University, is seeking to consolidate and expand its research and educational activities within the field of Classical Archaeology. We invite applications for an assistant professorship that will be available from 1 February 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The assistant professorship is a full-time, fixed term three-year position. The position involves research and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

The position

The position is offered with a view to attracting talented applicants with an excellent and well-documented track record in innovative and internationally recognised research in Classical Archaeology, who are able to contribute to the continuing development of the Department’s core activities in research, education and knowledge exchange.

This assistant professorship is not a tenure track position, which means that no tenure position is planned to follow the assistant professorship.

Research

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to core activities at the School of Culture and Society and Aarhus University in general and to strengthen the research activities of the Department of History and Classical Studies. They will be expected to take an interest in interdisciplinary collaboration within the “Classical Antiquity and its Heritage” research programme, the School of Culture and Society, the Faculty of Arts, and beyond.

The successful applicant will also be encouraged to develop new research projects with internal and external partners.

Teaching

The successful applicant will be responsible for planning, developing and teaching Bachelor’s and Master’s level courses, including “Introduction to Roman Archaeology” (BA Classical Archaeology) and “Thematic Seminar” (MA Archaeology, Classical Archaeology Track). The successful applicant will have access to the teaching and support services provided by AU’s Centre for Educational Development. Applicants must also be able to teach general courses in Classical Archaeology.

We ask applicants to reflect explicitly on their ambitions and visions for their teaching in the field of Classical Archaeology.  

We emphasise the importance of maintaining a dedicated and respectful relationship between staff and students, so the ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate and exemplify their commitment to participatory teaching initiatives and student involvement as part of their teaching portfolio.

Talent development

The assistant professor may act as co-supervisor to PhD students and assist in the planning and teaching of PhD seminars and other events aimed at doctoral training.

Knowledge exchange

It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange as described in the strategy for the Faculty of Arts https://arts.au.dk/om-arts/strategi-arts-2020-2025/, for instance research cooperation with private companies, government consultancy, cooperation with civil society partners or the public dissemination of knowledge. Applicants should document any prior experience within the field of knowledge exchange.

Qualifications

Applicants for the assistant professorship must hold a PhD or equivalent in Classical Archaeology. They must also be able to document the following:

• A promising research profile documented through relevant academic publications, and possibly other research contributions, at the highest international level.
• Experience of university-level teaching and a commitment to teaching development and the supervision of student projects.
• Active participation in international research collaboration.

Past research achievements will be assessed based on the active research time of the applicant in question. We therefore ask applicants to specify any career breaks they have had, for instance due to maternity/paternity leave) in order to gauge their research productivity.

Only submitted publications will be assessed; a list of publications is not sufficient. Applications without submitted publications will not be assessed.

Classical Studies deals with all aspects of Graeco-Roman Antiquity: material and visual culture, literature and language, ideas and ideals.
