Two-Year Replacement Position, Open Rank : South Asian History/ Political Sociology

The Centre for Modern Indian Studies at the Georg-August-University of Göttingen invites applications for a
Substitute Professor (Open Rank) in South Asian History or Political Sociology (f/m/d)
within the scope of a public-law employment contract. The position is for two years (from 1st October 2022 to 30th September 2024). The basic remuneration is in accordance with the BesGr. W2 NBesO.
The successful candidate will demonstrate ability to teach courses that directly replace, or are linked closely in theme and methods, to the existing courses taught by Prof. Rupa Viswanath: (1) Basic Sociological Concepts, which covers theories and comparative analyses of race, ethnicity, caste, and class; (2) Theories of the State, with an emphasis on Marxian approaches and case studies (3) Capitalism, Democracy and Minorities, offering a critical view of modern representative government and minority representation (4) Slaves, Peasants and Proletarians: Topics in Agrarian Transition, which introduces students to the classics of “the agrarian question” as well as recent debates on slavery, race, caste and capitalism. The teaching load is 9 hours, which amounts to approximately one undergraduate and one graduate course per semester.
Recruitment requirements are a doctorate in history, sociology, political science, South Asian Studies, or an allied field, and experience in research and teaching at a college or university.
